DC in Full Bloom

Our nation’s capital will soon become a place of beauty as thousands of Yoshino cherry blossom trees blush with delicate pink blooms. The National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates these trees and honors the friendship between the United States and Japan. In fact, Japan originally gifted DC over 3,000 of these trees in 1912.

That gift has multiplied into the bounty of cherry blossom trees that grace the city today. So, it’s not surprising that people flock to the area to take in the gorgeous trees during the two-weeks that they bloom each spring.

This year’s National Cherry Blossom Festival takes place from March 20 through April 15. Explore all the events taking place around the District. Peak bloom is predicted around March 27-31, and you can watch the Bloom Cam for live blossom action!

The National Cherry Blossom Festival has become one of the District’s biggest spectator events. The closing weekend begins with the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade® presented by Events DC. The parade will take place Saturday, April 14 at 9:45 a.m. The route runs for 10 blocks along the iconic Constitution Avenue.

The parade features:

  • Giant colorful helium balloons: Well-known characters like Peppa Pig and the Magic School Bus entertain kids and adults alike.
  • Elaborate floats: They’re all assembled right here in our neighborhood at the DC Armory!
  • Marching bands: Groups from across the country participate in serenading parade-goers.
  • Celebrity entertainers and performers: This year’s celebrity guests include Grand Marshal Carla Hall of The Chew, The Voice contestants Billy Gillman and Sarah Potenza, and singer Ty Herndon.

Events DC welcomes you to walk along with us in the parade. We’re looking for balloon handlers, banner carriers, and walkers behind the banners. We want as many neighbors as possible to turn out for this festive occasion that celebrates the beauty of DC. Parade participants will be accepted on a first-come basis. Children must be 13+ years old to walk in the parade without an adult.

To walk alongside Events DC in the Parade, please complete the Volunteer Form before 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 23. We will contact you via email with pertinent details and send you a Participant Release Form.
