What is the National Cannabis Festival All About?

In early 2015, a small group of cannabis enthusiasts joined together around the idea to create The National Cannabis Festival (NCF), an event celebrating progress on marijuana legalization in DC and across the nation. The founders envisioned a festival recognizing the spirit of the cannabis movement and the non-profit groups that have fought for so long to end marijuana prohibition.

Update: Multipurpose Fields

Throughout the winter months, the construction crew has been working diligently to transform parking lot 7 into the much-desired RFK Campus fields. The site work is ongoing in preparation for the artificial turf fields’ installation, including the assembly of new light poles that will allow for continued play after the sun goes down. The project has a certified business enterprise rate tracking at 40 percent and is scheduled to be substantially completed by late spring 2019.

SPK Closing

While we are sad to see them go, we are excited to have hosted Summit Point Kart (SPK) Capital Raceway on our campus as a way to introduce recreational amenities to you, our neighbors, as well as attract out-of-town visitors to the District. We’re looking forward to focusing our attention on the development of our multi-purpose fields and activating the Campus as the re-opening of Lot 8 presents an opportunity for future programs and events to utilize that space. Keep an eye on our website, social media channels, and this newsletter for future updates, and please join us in wishing the SPK Capital Raceway team happy trails.

Campus Redevelopment Update

The first phase of the short-term RFK Campus redevelopment continues, with significant progress being made on the new multi-purpose recreational fields. We are currently working on asphalt demolition, soil removal, grading and field drainage, forming foundations for light poles and other structures, as well as installing site utilities.

All redevelopment is being implemented through environmental remediation plans as approved by the District’s Department of the Environment (DOEE) and the National Park Service (NPS). All excavated soil and groundwater encountered are being hauled-off and disposed of at appropriate facilities. Clean fill will be brought in and geotextile fabric barriers installed throughout the site. Construction workers have been properly trained to handle soils. (Workers are wearing Tyvek suits as an additional precautionary measure.) Over 118 soil samples have been collected and tested by Events DC’s environmental engineers. Air monitoring along the perimeter fence will continue throughout construction.

As you may know, since the relocation of D.C. United to its new home at Audi Field, Events DC has been planning the future of the RFK Campus with critical community input focused on short term programming and development. The new fields will transform 27-acres of asphalt into three new state-of-the-art artificial turf fields for recreational and community use, including a youth soccer field, two baseball/softball diamonds, two full soccer fields, and two lacrosse fields. Visitors can take in all the action from bleacher seating that will hold up to 300 people, in addition to a picnic area and playground.

The development of the multi-purpose fields continues to be on time and on budget, with expected delivery in late spring of this year. Did you know you can follow the progress in real-time via a live webcam of the construction site? We will continue to make updates on our website as they become available; or, continue to check our social media accounts for progress reports.

Community Spotlight: Keegan Theatre

A Q&A with Keegan Theatre, a recipient of the Events DC Community Grant Program.

What was it like in the beginning?  I started Keegan with three other founding members in 1996 and we were producing half as many productions without a permanent space. We paid artists what we could – which wasn't much – and we didn’t have a paid staff.
