Our Local Heroes: Anacostia Watershed Society

The Anacostia watershed just got a whole lot cleaner thanks to about 2,000 volunteers! This month, we’re going to take a bit of time to appreciate the work that they’ve done to help make our surrounding area a little bit more beautiful.https://www.anacostiaws.org

Every year, the Anacostia Watershed Society hosts an annual clean-up of the Anacostia River as part of their Earth Day celebrations. This year, on April 21, volunteers had their choice of 30 different sites to choose from on clean-up day in DC, Prince George’s County, and Montgomery County.

As you might expect, some sites required a little more work than others, but in the end, the river was a cleaner and happier place to spend time. This event was successful thanks to the efforts of thousands of volunteers who not only helped pick up garbage, but also organized the clean-up, nominated sites for cleaning, and helped lead the community to make the Anacostia Watershed a better place.

After the event, volunteers were invited to celebrate at a thank you celebration put on by the Anacostia Watershed Society. Some local area restaurants offered discounts for our Earth Day Volunteers: Anyone wearing their volunteer t-shirt enjoyed special deals to thank them for their role in making the Anacostia River cleaner.

The Anacostia Watershed Society has been working to improve the Anacostia watershed since 1989. They work to protect and restore the watershed and its communities through clean ups, restoration projects and by honoring the heritage of the river system. Their goal is to make the Anacostia, and its tributaries, swimmable and fishable for the health and enjoyment of the community. Find out more – or get involved – at www.anacostiaws.org.
