Quarterly Meeting Recap

On January 24, we hosted a quarterly meeting moderated by Greg O’Dell, Events DC President and CEO, and followed by Q&A session with area residents. It was great to see many of you in attendance. Having completed the long-term planning, Events DC is now focused on five short-term elements. These are things we can do on the campus now that you and your neighbors will enjoy, plus we’re confident that they will make our area a regional asset to bring visitors:

  1. Multi-purpose community fields
  2. Market Hall
  3. Sports & Recreation Complex
  4. Pedestrian bridges with better connectivity to the site
  5. RFK Memorial

So what are our next steps? We’re breaking ground on the multi-purpose fields in the next couple months! We’re excited about converting this asphalt into green space, and we want to make sure that you are, too. We’ll keep you informed on the progress through plenty of mailings, community meetings, updates on our website, and this e-newsletter. In fact, read on in this issue for details on the multi-purpose fields.

We hear you! Through your questions at the community meetings and your emails to us at the office, we know that you have a lot to say about the redevelopment projects. We’re listening, and we’re making every effort to answer and accommodate your issues. Some of the things we heard at the meeting included:

  • Limiting construction/dump trucks from neighborhoods during construction
  • Ensuring that DC residents have access to the complex
  • Getting bathroom facilities prior to opening of multi-purpose fields
  • Keeping the redesigned site ADA-compliant and appropriate to senior citizens
  • Establishing new traffic networks to cut down on gridlock
  • Maintaining job opportunities for DC residents, during and after construction
  • Honoring RFK’s legacy – keeping the Kennedy family very involved

In addition, we have heard concerns about affordability and funding for this massive redevelopment. Please know that Events DC gets funding from tourism (hotel and restaurant taxes) and other revenue generators. A private partnership is needed for funding. You, your neighbors, and the rest of the taxpayers in the District will not be financially responsible for this project.
