RFK Campus Multi-Purpose Fields To Take Shape

We all enjoy playing outside, with our kids at their tournaments, with our teammates in our weekly leagues, with our neighbors in pickup games. But we’ve all noticed a big problem that has started getting in the way of our play:

We have a real shortage of fields, both in the RFK Campus neighborhood and across the city.

At Events DC, we’re planning ways to help relieve some of this. We have developed an economical and efficient approach in the form of multi-purpose use community fields. As we’ve moved from master planning to concept design into schematics, we’ve had the opportunity to hone in on the program understanding from a technical perspective.

We’ve made changes to the multi-purpose fields along the way, based on your feedback and input from partners like CRYSP. Our vision now includes the following:

  • 2 full-sized artificial turf soccer fields
  • 1 soccer/lacrosse field with 2 youth baseball diamonds
  • storage and maintenance facilities to support the fields
  • public restroom facilities
  • public greenspace for non-game day
  • bioretention for storm water management
  • pedestrian and bike paths, connections from paths to the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail
  • celebration pavilion
  • playground
  • access road, parking & drop-off zones

The nice thing about the location is that it’s relatively flat. We won’t face a lot of excavation work, and construction really shouldn’t be very intrusive. There will be some remediation with grading and construction, but any contaminated soils will be removed safely and securely. And we’re looking into ways to limit large truck traffic from the neighborhoods during construction.

By the end of next winter, we want everyone to be out enjoying these fields! To that end, we issued a Request for Proposal for design build services in late January; this is to find interested firms who can take on the project. We will award the build contract in the spring and start construction in the summer. If all goes according to plan, we will open the fields for play in spring 2019.
